## Route description

Start in Chalkida, where the Euripus Strait narrows to a few dozen metres and the tidal currents reverse direction several times a day. Watch the water from the old sliding bridge, then visit the 17th-century Karababa fortress on the mainland side. Parking in the centre is limited, so a motorhome is easier left on the outskirts.

Head north-west, a drive of roughly two hours, to Thermopylae, the narrow coastal pass where the Greeks held back the Persians in 480 BC. The bronze Leonidas monument stands beside the highway, the fighting took place across the road, and the hot springs that gave the pass its name survive near the foot of the hill.

From Lamia continue inland to Lake Plastira, an artificial lake ringed by wooded mountains in Thessaly, a good place for a slow lakeside afternoon and an overnight stop. Mountain roads are winding, so allow extra time with a camper. Wild camping rules vary, so check local rules before parking for the night.

The final leg runs north to Kalambaka, the town at the foot of the great rock pillars of Metéora. The monasteries stand on the summits and are among the most remarkable sights in Greece. Spend the last day on the viewpoints and the narrow road between the rocks, and leave early to avoid the busiest hours.
