## Route description

Start with a morning in Marfa, then take US-90 east to Alpine for supplies; it is the last larger town on this loop. TX-118 climbs north from Alpine into grassland and volcanic hills to Fort Davis, one of the highest towns in Texas.

Fort Davis National Historic Site sits right at the edge of town below a rock wall; its adobe and stone barracks tell the story of the frontier army and the Buffalo Soldiers. Just west, Davis Mountains State Park has a campground, a lookout on Skyline Drive and trails through oak canyons.

TX-118 continues to McDonald Observatory, passing close to the highest point on any public highway in Texas. Book the evening star party well ahead and bring warm clothes; the drive back down after dark is slow, with deer on the road.

For a longer day, complete the Davis Mountains Scenic Loop on TX-166 back to Fort Davis, then take TX-17 north through Wild Rose Pass to Balmorhea State Park. Its spring-fed pool is clear and cool year-round; reserve a day pass online, especially on summer weekends.
