## Route description

The Creole Nature Trail is a designated All-American Road through the coastal marshes of south-west Louisiana. Leave Lake Charles on LA-27 south through Sulphur and Hackberry, and stop at the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge wetland walkway to see alligators, herons and spoonbills close up.

LA-27 reaches the Gulf at Holly Beach, a long, low beach rebuilt many times after hurricanes. Head east on LA-82 and cross the Calcasieu Ship Channel on the Cameron ferry, a short ride that can involve a wait when ships pass; check that it is running before you go.

Beyond Cameron, the road runs through open marsh to the side road to Rutherford Beach, where you can often drive onto the hard sand. Return to LA-27 at Creole and head north to Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge, where the Pintail Wildlife Drive loops past ponds with alligators and, in winter, great flocks of ducks and geese.

Services are scarce on the southern part of the loop, so fill up in Lake Charles and bring water and insect repellent. Late fall through early spring is the best season for birds and cooler weather; avoid the trip when a storm is forecast in the Gulf.
