## Route description

Begin at Leeds Castle near Maidstone, set on islands in a lake among parkland, close to the M20. Then cut north through orchards to Whitstable, a harbour town famous for its oysters, with weatherboarded cottages along a shingle beach.

Canterbury is a short drive south. Use a park and ride and walk into the medieval centre to visit the cathedral, where Thomas Becket was killed, and the lanes around it that still follow the pilgrims’ route.

The A2 leads to Dover. Park at the National Trust site above the port and walk along the White Cliffs to South Foreland lighthouse; ferries and the coast of France are in view on clear days. The A20 and A259 then follow the coast west past Folkestone and Hythe.

Dungeness is a strange, flat headland of shingle, huts and lighthouses with a nuclear power station beside it; climb the old lighthouse for the view. End in Rye, a hilltop town of cobbled streets and timber-framed houses, with the dunes of Camber Sands a few minutes away.
