## Route description

From Luxembourg City drive north-east into the Mullerthal region, a plateau cut by narrow valleys full of sandstone cliffs, caves and ferns. Start at Beaufort, where you can visit both the castle ruin and the later château.

Continue down the valley of the Black Ernz to the Schiessentümpel waterfall, the easiest stop on the Mullerthal Trail; short loops from here lead through rock corridors and gorges. Then drive on to Echternach on the Sûre, the German border, for the basilica and a lakeside walk.

From Echternach follow the Sûre and then the Moselle south on the N10. Grevenmacher, Remich and the smaller villages between them are surrounded by vineyards making Riesling, Pinot and sparkling crémant, and most wine houses welcome visitors.

End at Schengen, the village where the treaty that opened Europe’s borders was signed in 1985; a small museum explains the story. The riverside road is flat and easy, but parking at the Mullerthal hiking spots is tight for motorhomes, so arrive early.

3. **Schiessentümpel** (Müllerthal, Luxembourg): A small triple waterfall under an old stone footbridge, the picture-postcard stop of Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland. The car park fills early on summer weekends.

5. **Basilica of Saint Willibrord** (Echternach, Luxembourg): The abbey church of Luxembourg’s oldest town, with the tomb of Saint Willibrord in the crypt. The dancing procession held here on Whit Tuesday is on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list.
