## Route description

From Stockholm drive south to Nynäshamn for the car ferry to Visby, about three hours and a quarter. Book well in advance for July and early August, when Almedalen Week and Medieval Week bring big crowds.

Visby is a UNESCO town ringed by an almost complete medieval wall, with church ruins among its lanes and roses on the houses. Leave the car outside the wall and walk; then follow route 149 north along the coast to Lummelunda Cave.

Continue to Fårösund, where a free ferry crosses to Fårö. The island is known for its raukar, limestone sea stacks shaped by waves, especially at Langhammars and Digerhuvud, and for Ingmar Bergman, who lived and filmed here.

Return south along the east coast to Ljugarn, a relaxed seaside village with raukar of its own and a long sandy beach, then drive through the flat, empty south to Hoburgen at the southern tip. Gotland is ideal for motorhomes and cycling, with short distances and many campsites near the sea.
