## Route description

Start at Forchtenstein Castle on the edge of the Rosalia hills, the treasure house of the Esterházy princes. Drive down to Eisenstadt, the small capital of Burgenland, where the Esterházy Palace and Haydn’s house recall the composer’s long years here.

Rust, on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl, is famous for storks nesting on its chimneys from spring to August and for its sweet Ausbruch wine. The lake is huge but shallow and fringed by a wide reed belt, so access to the water is by causeways to lido areas.

The road around the northern end of the lake passes through Neusiedl am See to Podersdorf, the only village with open access to the shore, a small lighthouse and a historic windmill. It is a popular spot for kitesurfing and has a large lakeside campsite.

South of Podersdorf, the Seewinkel is a flat steppe landscape of salt lakes, part of a national park shared with Hungary. Cycling is the best way to explore; in summer a bike ferry links Illmitz or Podersdorf with Rust and Mörbisch across the lake. Spring and autumn bird migrations are spectacular.
