## Route description

From Richmond head northwest on I-64 and US-15 into the Piedmont to Orange, then south to James Madison’s Montpelier, about 1.5 hours. The house has been restored to its appearance in Madison’s retirement, and rebuilt quarters show where the enslaved community lived. Allow half a day, including a walk on the trails into the old-growth James Madison Landmark Forest behind the house.

VA-20 runs south through horse farms and vineyards to Charlottesville, about 45 minutes, a university town with a pedestrian mall downtown and Jefferson’s University of Virginia. Monticello is just southeast of town; buy timed tickets ahead, park at the visitor center and ride the shuttle up the hill. Dozens of wineries of the Monticello Wine Trail lie within half an hour if you want to taste Virginia wines.

Take US-29 south and US-460 east to Appomattox, about 1.5 hours. At Appomattox Court House National Historical Park you walk from the lot into the small restored village, where Lee surrendered to Grant in the McLean House in April 1865. Then return west on US-460 to Lynchburg, a hilly river city on the James with a restored downtown and good places to stay the night.

Southwest of Lynchburg, Poplar Forest shows Jefferson the architect in a quieter setting. Continue on US-460 to Bedford, then climb VA-43, steep and winding, to the Blue Ridge Parkway at the Peaks of Otter, where a lakeside path and the Sharp Top trail reward an early start. Follow the Parkway south for about an hour to Roanoke, or use US-460 in a large RV. The route is about 440 km.
