## Route description

This is the quieter Loire, upstream of the famous châteaux. From Orléans follow the D951 along the south bank to Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire, where Benedictine monks still sing the offices in a great Romanesque abbey church, then on to Gien with its hunting castle and faience works.

A few kilometres upstream, the Briare canal bridge carries a canal across the Loire on a 662 m steel trough; walk out along the towpath or take a short boat trip over it. Then head east into the woods of Puisaye to Guédelon, where a castle has been rising since 1997 using only medieval techniques.

Sancerre sits on its hill above vineyards of Sauvignon Blanc; taste the wine and the little Crottin de Chavignol goat cheeses from the neighbouring village. The last leg crosses the open Berry countryside to Bourges, whose Gothic cathedral and old half-timbered streets deserve half a day.

The Loire à Vélo cycle route follows much of this route, so bring bikes. Guédelon is closed from November to March, and spring or early autumn is the most pleasant time.

4. **Briare canal bridge** (Briare, France): A 662 m steel trough opened in 1896 that carries a canal over the Loire. You can walk along either towpath while barges glide across above the river.
5. **Guédelon castle** (Treigny, France): A fortified castle being built from scratch since 1997 with 13th-century tools and methods. Masons, carpenters and dyers work in the open; it is closed in winter.
