## Route description

Leave Wichita north-west on K-96 for Hutchinson, about 70 km away. Two very different museums fill a day here: the Cosmosphere, with real Apollo and Soviet space hardware, and Strataca, where you ride a hoist 200 m down into a working salt mine. Tickets for the Strataca mine train and the dark ride are sold separately, so buy the combination you want at the start.

From Hutchinson follow K-96 and US-56 west to Great Bend, where the Santa Fe Trail swung close to the Arkansas River. North-east of town, Cheyenne Bottoms is one of the most important wetlands for migrating shorebirds in North America, busiest in April and May and again in autumn. The Kansas Wetlands Education Center on K-156 has maps of the driving routes.

Continue south-west on US-56 to Pawnee Rock, a sandstone lookout where travelers carved their names, and on to Fort Larned National Historic Site, 10 km west of Larned on K-156. The fort is one of the most complete of its kind; living history weekends are held in summer. A short detour leads to a surviving stretch of trail ruts.

The last leg follows US-56 and US-50 south-west to Dodge City, about 110 km from Larned. Boot Hill Museum recreates Front Street as it looked in the 1870s cattle-drive days, and a walking trail downtown marks sites linked to Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson. All roads on this route are wide, straight and easy for RVs; watch for strong crosswinds on the open plains.
