## Route description

Leave Nashville south on the Natchez Trace Parkway, or faster on I-65 and US-64, for Florence in north-west Alabama, about 2 hours 30 minutes. Florence and its neighbors Tuscumbia and Muscle Shoals are known as the Shoals, home to recording studios where many hit records of the 1960s and 1970s were made. Florence also has the Frank Lloyd Wright Rosenbaum House, open for tours.

Ivy Green, Helen Keller’s birthplace, is in Tuscumbia just across the Tennessee River from Florence. The Alabama Music Hall of Fame is nearby. From the Shoals, drive east on US-72 and I-565 to Huntsville, about 1 hour 30 minutes. Huntsville grew with the space program, and the U.S. Space & Rocket Center next to I-565 is the main sight.

Downtown Huntsville has a pleasant historic district around Big Spring Park, and Monte Sano State Park above the city has trails and a campground. From Huntsville take US-72 east to Woodville and Cathedral Caverns State Park near Woodville, about 1 hour. Tours take about 90 minutes; the cave is cool all year, so bring a light jacket in summer.

From the caverns head south on US-431 and AL-79 or I-59 to Birmingham, about 1 hour 30 minutes. Vulcan Park on Red Mountain has the best view of the city, and Sloss Furnaces, a former iron plant, is now a free museum. The route has good roads throughout, but Birmingham’s traffic is heavy at rush hour. Spring and autumn are the best seasons.
