## Route description

Leave Kanab south on US-89A and turn west at Fredonia on AZ-389 for Pipe Spring, a stone ranch fort built around a desert spring. Back in Fredonia, US-89A climbs onto the Kaibab Plateau through juniper and then ponderosa pine to Jacob Lake, about 50 km away. This is the last place with lodging and a full stop for food before the rim; the North Rim itself has only a small store and pay-at-the-pump fuel.

AZ-67 runs 70 km south from Jacob Lake through meadows where deer and bison graze. The North Rim is open only from mid-May to mid-October, and the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire destroyed the Grand Canyon Lodge. In 2026 there is no lodging or potable water on the rim, the visitor center is closed, and the Bright Angel Point trail remains shut. North Rim Campground reopened with basic facilities, so carry water and check the park’s North Rim status page first. Nights are cold even in July.

Spend a day on the Cape Royal Road, a winding paved spur of about 32 km with pullouts all the way. Detour first to Point Imperial, the highest viewpoint on either rim, then continue past Vista Encantada and Roosevelt Point to Cape Royal and Angels Window. Large RVs manage the road but should take it slowly; parking at Point Imperial and Cape Royal is limited, so aim for early morning or late afternoon.

Return to Jacob Lake and follow US-89A east as it drops steeply off the plateau to House Rock Valley below the red Vermilion Cliffs, a good place to look for condors. Cross Marble Canyon on Navajo Bridge, walking the old span, and take the paved spur to Lees Ferry, where river trips launch. From there it is about an hour to Page via US-89, with Horseshoe Bend just before town.
