## Route description

From Santa Barbara, SR-154 climbs San Marcos Pass into the Santa Ynez Mountains. Chumash Painted Cave State Historic Park is reached by a narrow, steep lane off the highway with space for only a couple of cars; leave motorhomes in Santa Barbara or skip it. The pictographs are behind a grille, and the visit takes only a few minutes.

SR-154 continues past Lake Cachuma to the Santa Ynez Valley, a wine region of oak-studded hills and ranches. South of Solvang, Nojoqui Falls County Park has a short shaded trail to a waterfall that flows best after winter rain. Solvang, founded by Danish settlers in 1911, has half-timbered buildings, windmills and bakeries, but parking in town is tight for large vehicles.

Mission Santa Inés, founded in 1804, stands at the edge of Solvang with a museum and garden. Continue west on SR-246 through Buellton, where wine tasting rooms line the road toward Lompoc, to La Purísima Mission, the most fully restored mission in California. Its workshops, gardens and farm animals make a good stop with children; allow two hours.

From Lompoc, take SR-1 north through Guadalupe to Oceano, where you can drive onto the beach at Pier Avenue; check tide and closure notices and avoid soft sand with heavy vehicles. In Pismo Beach, monarch butterflies overwinter in a eucalyptus grove from about November to February. San Luis Obispo is 15 minutes further on US-101.
