## Route description

Leave Porto north on the N13 or the A28 to Vila do Conde, 30 km away, a shipbuilding town with a long aqueduct and the Santa Clara convent above the river. The Minho coast is greener and cooler than the south, with long beaches, pine woods and strong Atlantic waves; swimming is best on calm summer days. Continue north past Póvoa de Varzim and Esposende.

Viana do Castelo is 45 km further. Drive or take the funicular up to the Santa Luzia sanctuary for the view over the Lima estuary. The town below has Renaissance squares and the hospital ship Gil Eannes as a museum. Its big festival in August, the Romaria de Nossa Senhora da Agonia, is famous for costumes and gold filigree jewellery. Then follow the N13 north to Caminha at the mouth of the Minho.

From Caminha the N13 runs up the river to Valença, 25 km. Its fortress has two linked star-shaped walls with lanes of shops inside. Park outside the gates. Walk or drive across the old iron bridge into Spain to Tui, a Galician town with a fortress-like cathedral on its hill. Spain is one hour ahead of Portugal, so adjust your plans for opening times.

From Tui follow the PO-552 down the Spanish bank of the Minho to A Guarda and turn off up Monte Santa Trega, where round stone houses of a Celtic hillfort look over the river mouth. The PO-552 then runs along a rocky coast to Baiona, where a replica of the caravel Pinta, which brought news of Columbus’ landfall in 1493, is moored in the harbour. The route is about 180 km.
