## Route description

Leave Aosta east on the SS26 or the A5 motorway, which is tolled. After about 13 km, Fénis Castle, with its towers and painted courtyard, is a short detour south of the road. Continue to Châtillon and turn north onto the SR46, which climbs 27 km up the Valtournenche to Breuil-Cervinia, at 2,050 metres, facing the Italian side of the Matterhorn, called Cervino here.

Cervinia is a ski resort with cable cars to the glacier on the Swiss border, running in summer as well. Just below it, a short path leads from the SR46 to Lago Blu, a small lake that reflects the Matterhorn on still mornings. The Valtournenche road is wide enough for motorhomes, with several car parks in Cervinia, but it is busy on winter weekends.

Back in the main valley, continue east to Verrès, crossing the river to Issogne Castle, a Renaissance residence famous for its painted portico and pomegranate fountain. A few kilometres further, the Fort of Bard blocks the valley from a rock above a small medieval village; glass lifts carry you up to the museum of the Alps. At Pont-Saint-Martin, a Roman bridge still crosses the Lys torrent.

From Pont-Saint-Martin, the SR44 climbs the Gressoney valley to Gressoney-Saint-Jean, about 30 km away. This valley was settled by Walser people from the Valais in the Middle Ages, and their wooden houses and German dialect survive. Queen Margherita’s Castel Savoia stands above the village, and the valley ends under the glaciers of Monte Rosa. The main roads are open all year; carry winter equipment from November to April.
