## Route description

Start in Kiama and spend the morning at the blowhole and the harbour. From there it is about 80 km south to Huskisson, roughly an hour on the Princes Highway and then Jervis Bay Road. The route is sealed and suits campervans and caravans, but fuel is less frequent once you leave the Illawarra, so fill up in Nowra or Kiama.

Jervis Bay is the highlight of day two. Hyams Beach, about 10 km from Huskisson, has very fine white sand, but parking fills early in summer. Huskisson is a good base, with boat tours that look for dolphins and, in winter, whales. Swim only where the water is calm, and keep to marked paths in the national park.

Drive about 110 km to Batemans Bay, roughly 1.5 hours, then continue another 25 km or so to Murramarang National Park. At Pebbly Beach, eastern grey kangaroos feed on the sand at dawn and dusk. Keep your distance and do not feed them. Camp only at the designated campground and book ahead in holiday periods.

The last leg is about 85 km from Batemans Bay to Narooma, around an hour, with kangaroo warnings on the highway at dusk. Book a boat tour to Montague Island, a nature reserve with seals and, in season, little penguins; landings depend on sea conditions. Finish with a short inland detour to Central Tilba, a late-19th-century village at the foot of Gulaga.

## Stop-by-stop itinerary

1. **Kiama** (New South Wales)
2. **Kiama Blowhole** (Kiama, New South Wales): A natural blowhole in the rocks by Blowhole Point that shoots seawater high into the air when a large swell arrives. A short walk from the main street, it is most impressive in a strong swell.
3. **Huskisson** (New South Wales)
4. **Hyams Beach** (Huskisson, New South Wales): A small village on Jervis Bay famous for its very fine, bright white quartz sand and clear shallow water. Parking is limited in summer and on weekends, so go early or visit outside school holidays.
5. **Batemans Bay** (New South Wales)
6. **Pebbly Beach campground, Murramarang National Park** (Durras, New South Wales): A national park campground behind a small beach where eastern grey kangaroos graze at dawn and dusk. It is popular in school holidays and long weekends, so book ahead and keep food stored away from wildlife.
7. **Montague Island (Barunguba)** (Narooma, New South Wales): A nature reserve about 9 km off Narooma with a 1881 lighthouse, seal colonies and little penguins that come ashore at dusk in spring and summer. Landings are on guided boat tours only and depend on the sea state.
8. **Central Tilba village** (Tilba, New South Wales): A well-preserved late-19th-century village at the foot of Gulaga (Mount Dromedary), with timber shopfronts, a cheese factory and craft shops. It is a short detour inland from the Princes Highway south of Narooma.
