## Route description

Leave Sydney on the M1 Pacific Motorway and aim for Wollombi, about 140 km and two hours away, a quiet sandstone village near the Great North Road. Continue 30 km to Cessnock, the gateway to the Hunter Valley. Plan a night here: wineries are close together, and taxis or tours are the safe option if you plan to taste.

Spend the morning at the cellar doors around Pokolbin, then drive about 75 km to Newcastle in around an hour. Swim or watch the surfers at Newcastle Ocean Baths, and walk the foreshore to see the old convict-built breakwater and the city's heritage precinct. Newcastle has large service stations and cafés, so refuel here.

Continue about 65 km north-east to Nelson Bay in Port Stephens, usually under an hour and a quarter. Climb Tomaree Head, about 30 minutes each way, for a view over the bay. Then visit the Worimi sand dunes near Anna Bay, either with a licensed tour or only with a valid permit and 4WD. Dolphin cruises run from Nelson Bay.

The final day is the longest: about 220 km from Nelson Bay to Port Macquarie, around three hours, via the Pacific Highway. Watch for kangaroos and wallabies on rural sections at dawn and dusk. Visit the Koala Hospital, then finish at Tacking Point Lighthouse, where you can watch whales between about May and November. Fuel is available along the highway.

## Stop-by-stop itinerary

1. **Sydney** (New South Wales)
2. **Wollombi village** (Wollombi, New South Wales): A small sandstone village set among bushland south-west of the vineyards, close to the convict-built Great North Road. It makes a quiet alternative to the cellar-door crowds, with old buildings and a country pub.
3. **Cessnock** (New South Wales)
4. **Pokolbin cellar doors, Hunter Valley** (Pokolbin, New South Wales): The heart of the Hunter Valley, Australia's oldest wine region by continuous production, known for Semillon and Shiraz. Dozens of cellar doors cluster here, so choose a designated driver or book a tour.
5. **Newcastle** (New South Wales)
6. **Newcastle Ocean Baths** (Newcastle, New South Wales): A large tidal swimming pool by the sea, opened in 1922 with an Art Deco pavilion added later. It sits below the Bogey Hole and the Newcastle foreshore walk, handy for a swim after exploring the city.
7. **Nelson Bay** (New South Wales)
8. **Tomaree Head summit** (Shoal Bay, New South Wales): A steady 30-minute climb in Tomaree National Park leads to a rocky summit with 360-degree views over Port Stephens, the Pacific and the offshore islands. Remains of a World War II battery lie along the way.
9. **Stockton Bight sand dunes, Worimi Conservation Lands** (Anna Bay, New South Wales): Huge moving sand dunes stretching along the coast, jointly managed with the Worimi people. Sandboarding and quad tours run from the Anna Bay area; driving your own 4WD on the beach needs a permit and tide knowledge.
10. **Port Macquarie** (New South Wales)
11. **Port Macquarie Koala Hospital** (Port Macquarie, New South Wales): A volunteer-run wildlife hospital, founded in 1973, that treats koalas hit by cars, attacked by dogs or sick with disease. Visitors can see patients and long-term residents and learn about habitat loss.
12. **Tacking Point Lighthouse** (Port Macquarie, New South Wales): A small white lighthouse from 1879 on a headland south of Port Macquarie, with long views along the surf coast. From roughly May to November it is a good spot to watch humpback whales passing.
