## Route description

Day one: drive the Calder Freeway north-west to Hanging Rock near Woodend, about 75 km and one hour, and climb to the summit. Continue about 55 km west to the spa town of Daylesford and Hepburn Springs to taste the mineral water. Roads are sealed, but there are many bends in the hills, and kangaroos are active at dusk.

Day two: Daylesford to Ballarat is about 45 km. Give Sovereign Hill most of the morning, then see the Eureka Centre in the afternoon to understand the 1854 miners' uprising. Ballarat has plenty of accommodation, and its Victorian streets are good for a short evening walk. Ballarat is cold on winter mornings, so pack warm clothes.

Day three: drive about 110 km north-west to Bendigo, around 1 h 30 min, and join an underground tour at the Central Deborah Gold Mine. Take time for the Victorian-era buildings. Then continue north to Echuca, another 95 km, taking about an hour. In Echuca, board a paddle steamer cruise at the Port of Echuca in the afternoon.

Day four: explore the Barmah National Park, about 70 km from Echuca, with a paddle or drive through the red gum forest, where tracks can flood in winter and spring. Return to Melbourne via the Northern Highway and Hume Freeway, roughly 230 km and 2 h 45 min. Spring and autumn are most pleasant; summer temperatures can exceed 40 °C.

## Stop-by-stop itinerary

1. **Melbourne** (Victoria)
2. **Hanging Rock** (Woodend, Victoria): A volcanic rock formation near Woodend, made famous by the novel and film Picnic at Hanging Rock. A short climb to the summit rewards you with views across farmland, and the reserve has wild koalas.
3. **Hepburn Mineral Springs Reserve** (Hepburn Springs, Victoria): A bushland reserve with natural mineral springs near Daylesford, central to Victoria's spa country. You can taste the springs' naturally carbonated water from taps; bring a bottle.
4. **Ballarat** (Victoria)
5. **Sovereign Hill** (Ballarat, Victoria): An open-air museum re-creating Ballarat's 1850s gold-rush town, with costumed staff, a working mine and gold pouring demonstrations. It suits families and is best visited with a full morning or afternoon.
6. **Eureka Centre Ballarat** (Ballarat, Victoria): This centre tells the story of the 1854 Eureka Stockade, a miners' revolt against licence fees that is often seen as a defining moment in Australian democratic history. It stands near the original battle site.
7. **Bendigo** (Victoria)
8. **Central Deborah Gold Mine** (Bendigo, Victoria): A former gold mine in central Bendigo where tours take you underground by cage lift. Bendigo's gold rush began in 1851 and shaped the grand Victorian buildings of the city.
9. **Echuca** (Victoria)
10. **Port of Echuca** (Echuca, Victoria): The historic wharf of the Murray River's busiest 19th-century inland port, with a long red gum wharf and the world's largest fleet of operating paddle steamers. Short river cruises depart from here.
11. **Barmah National Park and Forest** (Barmah, Victoria): The largest river red gum forest in the world, on the Murray floodplain and recognised as a wetland of international importance. Paddle or drive the tracks. Roads can flood in winter and spring.
