## Route description

Adelaide to Port Augusta is about 310 km, roughly 3.5 hours on sealed highway. Stop at Port Germein to walk its 1.5 km timber jetty, then continue to Port Augusta, the gateway to the outback. From there the Flinders Ranges lie to the east. Travel between April and October: summer days regularly pass 40 degrees, and walking tracks may be closed in extreme heat.

Drive about 100 km to Hawker, fuelling there, then take the sealed road about 55 km to Wilpena Pound. Walk to Wangara Lookout, or start before dawn to climb St Mary Peak (1,171 m) on a long day hike. Camp or stay near the visitor centre, and carry plenty of water. Euros and red kangaroos are often seen in the evening.

Drive the unsealed Brachina Gorge road, a geological trail with signs naming rock layers hundreds of millions of years old. Look for yellow-footed rock-wallabies on cliffs at dusk and dawn. Check road conditions first, as creek crossings can be impassable after rain. Continue north to Blinman and take a guided underground tour at the old copper mine before an evening at the historic pub.

The last leg is long: continue north via Parachilna and Leigh Creek, then east towards Arkaroola, mostly sealed with some unsealed sections, so allow most of the day. At Arkaroola, join a guided 4WD ridgetop tour and stay for the night sky; the sanctuary is known for very dark skies. Carry extra fuel, food and water, as services are scarce.

## Stop-by-stop itinerary

1. **Port Germein Jetty** (Port Germein, South Australia): A timber jetty about 1.5 km long, one of the longest in the country, crossing tidal flats at the head of Spencer Gulf. A good leg-stretch on the road between Port Pirie and Port Augusta, popular for crabbing in summer.
2. **Port Augusta** (South Australia)
3. **Hawker** (South Australia)
4. **Wilpena Pound (Ikara)** (Hawker, South Australia): A vast natural amphitheatre of quartzite ranges, called Ikara, the meeting place, by the Adnyamathanha people. Walk to Wangara Lookout or climb St Mary Peak, at 1,171 m the highest point in the ranges. Avoid the heat of summer.
5. **Wilpena Pound Resort Campground** (Hawker, South Australia): A campground among river red gums at the entrance to the Pound, with caravan and tent sites next to the resort and visitor centre. A convenient base for walks; birds and euros are common, and nights in winter can be cold.
6. **Brachina Gorge Geological Trail** (Hawker, South Australia): A scenic unsealed drive through a gorge whose rock layers record hundreds of millions of years, with signs along the way. Yellow-footed rock-wallabies are often seen on the cliffs at dawn and dusk. Check road conditions after rain.
7. **Blinman Heritage Mine** (Blinman, South Australia): A small copper-mining village high in the northern Flinders Ranges, one of the highest towns in South Australia. Take a guided tour underground at the old mine, then have a meal at the historic pub.
8. **Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary** (Arkaroola, South Australia): A 610 km² private sanctuary in the remote northern Flinders Ranges, with rugged ridges, rock-wallabies and some of the darkest skies in the country. Guided 4WD ridgetop tours and an observatory are the draw; go between April and October.
