Rugged quartzite ranges, deep gorges and the vast natural amphitheatre of Wilpena Pound, known as Ikara to the Adnyamathanha people, rise from the arid plains of South Australia's north.

- **State:** South Australia
- **Highest peak:** St Mary Peak, 1,171 m
- **Best season:** April to October
- **Suggested time:** 2–4 days
- **Nearest town:** Hawker

## Before you go

- Visit between April and October; summer heat regularly exceeds 40 degrees and walks may close.
- Wilpena Pound is the hub: walk to Wangara Lookout or climb St Mary Peak, the highest point in the ranges.
- Roads beyond the main sealed routes are gravel and can become impassable after rain, so check conditions.

## Landscape and geology

The ranges are formed of ancient sedimentary rock, folded and eroded over hundreds of millions of years. Wilpena Pound is an oval ring of quartzite ridges, not a crater, and its gorges, such as Brachina, display layers that record early animal life. Vegetation is dominated by cypress pine and river red gums.

## Walking, driving and wildlife

Short walks start from the Wilpena visitor centre, while longer tracks climb to the rim. Scenic drives such as Brachina and Bunyeroo are unsealed. Yellow-footed rock-wallabies live on cliffs, and euros and red kangaroos graze at dusk, so drive carefully at the edges of the day.

## Where to stay

Wilpena Pound Resort has a campground and accommodation, and Hawker and Blinman offer pubs, small stores and fuel. Further north, Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary is a long drive away and known for 4WD ridgetop tours and dark night skies. Carry water, and in winter bring warm layers for the cold nights.

## FAQs

**When is the best time to visit the Flinders Ranges?**
From April to October, when days are mild and nights can be cold. Spring brings wildflowers in good seasons. Avoid summer, as temperatures often exceed 40 degrees and some walking tracks close in extreme heat.

**Can I drive to Wilpena Pound in a normal car?**
Yes, the road from Hawker to Wilpena is sealed. Scenic drives such as Brachina and Bunyeroo Gorges are unsealed but usually passable in dry weather; check conditions locally after rain.

**How long should I allow for the Flinders Ranges?**
Two nights around Wilpena allow a good walk and a gorge drive. With four days you can continue to Blinman and Arkaroola, though Arkaroola alone merits an overnight stay.
