The white villages (pueblos blancos) lie in the north of the provinces of Cádiz and Málaga. Two classic routes run via Arcos de la Frontera and Ronda.

- **Region:** Cádiz / Málaga
- **Start / end:** Arcos de la Frontera / Ronda
- **UNESCO:** Sierra de Grazalema Biosphere Reserve
- **Best season:** Spring and autumn

## Before you go

- The villages are known for whitewashed walls, narrow lanes and steep slopes. Park large vehicles outside the old centres and walk in.
- Free camping is banned in Andalusia under the 2003 camping decree. The Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park has campsites.
- Some trails in the natural park, including the Garganta Verde and the Pinsapar, need prior authorisation. Ask at a visitor centre before you plan a hike.

## Planning

The villages form two classic routes. The Ronda route includes, among others, Ronda, Setenil de las Bodegas, Zahara de la Sierra and Grazalema. The Arcos route includes, among others, Arcos de la Frontera, Medina Sidonia and Ubrique. Spring and autumn are the usual recommendation for travel, because summers are hot. Plan one base per route and drive short day loops. Both routes lie in the north of the provinces of Cádiz and Málaga.

## Camping

The Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park is a biosphere reserve and one of the rainiest areas in Spain. Free camping is banned in Andalusia under the 2003 camping decree, while motorhomes may stay in areas designated by municipalities. The park has campsites. Outside it, overnight rules for motorhomes depend on the municipality, so look for signs at each village and use official areas where they exist.

## Getting around

The villages sit on hills and have narrow streets, which can be hard for long or wide vehicles. Look for parking at the edge of each village before entering the centre. For hikes in the natural park, collect trail leaflets and permit information at the visitor centres in El Bosque or Cortes de la Frontera. The Junta de Andalucía publishes the official rules.
